How to Use Landscaping to Help Save Your Lawn

Whether we like it or not, when people are looking at homes, they’re often basing their decision on whether or not they want to see the inside of the home on what they see on the outside. 

That means that if you want to be serious about selling your home, you’ll need to put some time and effort into making sure your yard is in tip-top shape. Here are some things you can do to make your front yard really pop and impress buyers. Let’s jump right in!

What not to do

Sometimes the best advice isn’t so much what you can do as much as it’s what you shouldn’t do. This rings especially true when it comes to getting your yard ready to be sold.

The first thing you’ll want to avoid is having an unkempt space. That means flower beds with lots of weeds and debris everywhere. That means un-mowed grass and sloppy looking turf. It’s also a good idea to be on the lookout for overgrown plants and weeds that are sprouting up from your lawn. Both can make the space look uncared for – and pride in ownership is something a lot of buyers consider when purchasing a home. If not addressed, all of these issues are the kinds of things that make buyers pass on your property without a second thought.

However, there’s a flip side to all of this, too. There’s making your lawn look nice, but then there’s making your lawn looking a little too nice. As much as we enjoy a meticulously manicured front yard, most buyers don’t. Why? Because they see those spaces as high maintenance. And in today’s busy, fast-paced world – people want something that they’re not going to have to spend a lot of time and money to maintain. Long story, short- you want to clean up your yard, but you don’t want it to be too perfect.

What to do

In terms of what SHOULD be happening when you stage your yard, here’s what we recommend.

Frame the front door: Anything that can draw attention to your door is good. Use some potted plants on your porch or stoop, use hanging baskets or even plant some small trees or shrubs. This really squares up your door and almost yells ‘come in!’

  • Mulch: Mulch is a great way to kill weeds, make your plants pop and clean up/define space in your yard. Best of all – it’s an inexpensive way to turn up the curb appeal of your lawn in minutes.
  • Add color: Nothing will compliment your home more than a flush batch of colorful flowers. Ground plans and perennials will work just fine – but if you’re not into the idea of getting down and dirty in the dirt – you can get by just fine with some interesting looking potted plants!
  • Accessorize: Sometimes the best thing you can do is add a few bells and whistles. Wind Chimes are a great way to greet people but you also might want to think about freshening up your walkway. Anything that can draw attention to the home or give the buyer a particular sense of place will get the job done.
